SWAGING: THE PRINCIPLES
Like hydraulic autofrettage, mechanical autofrettage (also called “swaging” or “olivage”) is used to prestress gun barrels and prepare them to withstand pressure well, without additional deformation, shot after shot.
The process involves forcing a “swage” (or “olive”) through a barrel with a bore diameter smaller than that of the swage. This technique has been used for many decades since it makes it possible to rifle small-caliber barrels while calibrating their bore. It is still widely used in the English-speaking world for mechanical autofrettage of medium and large caliber gun barrels.
